At first glance I was worried my foot might feel too exposed, but with a pair of everyday socks on, they felt like wearing any other sneaker. The upper part of the shoe is largely made of mesh that provides excellent ventilation. Your feet won’t hurt after hours of standing on them, and your foot feels protected and stable inside of the shoe-which I find crucial when you’re out and about in a city. What I like about the sneaker in particular, however, is that it feels more substantial than a super-airy, lightweight shoe. While this certainly lends itself to a fun, sporty look, you can also be sure that there’s no slipping and sliding in these! (If you, like me, have ever slipped on the New York City subway stairs, you’ll appreciate this.) You can see the sole traction grips at the toe and below the sole of the shoe. The slim fit combined with the heel clip and sole traction lends itself to a swift, easy feel. The Nike Waffle Ones were designed in homage to the brand’s old-school racer, and while I prefer to run with a high-cushion sneaker, I could totally imagine a marathoner in 1975 going speedy in these. Below, you’ll find the rest of my thoughts on how the Nike Waffle Ones performed. I also applied my personal standards for a great athleisure sneaker: There should be no arch pain, blisters, or hot spots, and they should be both on trend in appearance and versatile in their use. I walked on city sidewalks, stood in long lines, jumped in and out of cabs, and ran to catch a subway car. So I was able to test the Nike Waffle Ones in a variety of ways-I wore them on casual walks around the neighborhood, but also out to fun dinners with friends on weekend trips to the suburbs, but also out to grab eggs from the corner bodega. For example: In a situation where I once would have grabbed a pair of sandals to wear with a dress, I’m now more inclined to pick a pair of sneakers. Once my friends and family all became vaccinated, I found myself seeking ways to balance my new comfortable, homebody habits with the busy, aesthetically minded lifestyle I had before the pandemic.

This is why it’s so fitting that I tested-and consequently fell in love with-the Nike Waffle Ones for the SELF 2021 Sneaker Awards.
